Installation "CAMOUFLAGE"  2007

also known as cryptic coloration, is the method that allows an otherwise visible organism or object to remain indiscernible from the surrounding environment.

Camouflage is a suspended sculpture/installation made of metal pipe, yarn and mirror shards, which physically reconfigures the space, while at the same time camouflaging it by flattening and fracturing the environment and thus abstracting it. Spatially the installation is conceived to take up a major part of the space, its mass focused in the center of the space allowing the viewer bypass it around the edges to access the backend of the sculpture, where the mirrors are recessed towards the center and form a cave like environment.

Mirror shards are glued back-to-back hanging of a delicately crochet camouflage yarn string attached to the pipe structure installed across the top of the stall.  The mirrors slowly gyrate. They flatten and fracture their surroundings. The reflective surfaces form an exquisite corps of the space as the sculpture camouflages itself with its environment. Although it is shiny and attractive in motion, it is made of sharp shards and hangs form a delicate yarn string; a dangerous object. This juxtaposition creates tension between the desires it taps into and the fears it evokes. The yarn works both as a mounting device and as the grammar to the piece. Its camouflage pattern reminiscent of the army does not do in this context what it is designed to do, it functions as a title, a read, on the piece. In the white gallery space it is the most visible element of the sculpture. The mirrors render themselves invisible by reflecting their environment. The light reflecting in the mirrors bounces from the floor and the walls and creates another pattern of lights and shadows covering the surrounding surfaces, moving as the mirrors are turning.
