Gallery Art
Forum Ute Barth is pleased to announce “Blue”, a thematic exhibition
focusing on the symbolic, cultural, and historical significance of the
colour blue in contemporary art.
The
exhibition highlights the most diverse and profound work of today that
employs colour as a mediator of specific emotions and messages.
As Yves
Klein's various avant-garde objects and actions with International Klein
Blue demonstrate, blue has a rich history in the contemporary period, not
only in terms of style, but also as a vehicle for the expression of complex
artistic positions and political statements.
The artists
in “Blue” continue this tradition, and include well-known practitioners such
as Pierre Alechinsky, Francis Bott, Maria Eitle-Vozar, Esther Roth and Hans
Schnorf, alongside two artists showing at the gallery for the first time;
Ursula Baur, whose sculptures are characterized by archaeological approaches
to colour, and Hans Thomann, who explores the relationship between colour
perception and its conventional utility in our daily lives. Together, these
artists bring diverse new meanings and critical irony to the theme “Blue”.

Kevin Finklea
Iryna Pryval
Vernissage am Mittwoch, 27. März 2013 18-20 Uhr
This spring Gallery Art Forum
Ute Barth presents a group exhibition featuring Kevin Finklea (*1958,
lives and works in Philadelphia, USA), Lucia Coray (*1957, lives and
works in Zurich, Switzerland) and Iryna Pryval (*1987, lives and
works in Nuremberg and Munich); artists who share a commitment to both
serial and pictorial strategies as the basis of their distinctive individual
practices. Seriality, among the most revolutionary techniques of modern art
to emerge in the early twentieth century with the painting of Monet, has
since been used as an apparatus for the critique of conventional visual
expression, methods, materials, compositional schemes, and even the politics
of seeing and image. This exhibition focuses on pictorial seriality in the
work of three contemporary artists, to highlight the diversity and
profundity of work centered on the act of repetition as a stylistic, and
hence political device, today.
The manifestation of repetition as both a formal and
disruptive act is particularly relevant to American artist Kevin Finklea
whose sculptural recycling of material from sculptures goes beyond reuse as
a principle, to assert the subversive possibilities of creative assembly.
Equally, Lucia Coray's optically destabilising drawings of the human
face (the leitmotif of her work since the early 1980's), appear in
innumerable variations. What initially began as sign-like elements ranked in
strict grid formations, over time evolved into stylized abstract figures,
layered together one across another in complex and oblique patterns. Finally
Iryna Pryval's uncanny gray, black and pastel-coloured "wrinkle
formations" are derived from the abstraction and transformation of baroque
draperies: what at first appear playful sequences of folds, quickly assume a
darker, unsettling character, stretched out across the walls of the gallery,
real yet surreal in their frozen verisimilitude.

Exhibition October 13 - November 17, 2012
Dieter Kraenzlein
The Lightness of Stone
Renowned for the clarity and simplicity of his limestone carvings, artist
Dieter Kraenzlein reduces the severity of stone to an incredible lightness,
testing the very limits of material and technique. ART FORUM UTE BARTH is
delighted to present his astonishing new sculptures and mural works at the
gallery in Zurich between 13th October and 17th November.
Limestone, a sedimentary rock composed of mineral crystals and skeletal
particles, is formed through the action of deposition and erosion by the
sea. Kraenzlein exploits its natural characteristics, responding to the
myriad stripes, spots, cracks and laminations present in every piece, to
create a language of semi-organic, semi-geometric shapes and motifs.
For this exhibition Kraenzlein has mainly chosen stone from stone quarry
in Moos near Wurzburg und Rielingshausen, a region famous for limestone with
an especially complex surface structure similar to that of Coquina. He
manipulates this rare material with considerable dexterity to pro-duce
sail-like works that appear to rise up weightlessly, as if stone could
simply be carried away by the wind, as light and flexible as canvas: the
thin, narrow shape and multifaceted surfaces inviting viewers to move around
in search of the constantly evolving images found at every new angle.
While Kraenzlein’s sculptures make reference to organic forms, he reduces
these to the verge of the geometric, simplifying visual compositions to
vertical and horizontal lines and coloured spots. By constantly repeating
and varying his carving action (he curves the surface of each work with a
FLEX angle grinder), lines and rusty spots of colour are turned into
fascinating patterns and structures that in turn give each work its own
unique rhythm.

„The
exclusion or inclusion of nature is, however, not a matter of the individual
artist’s choice.
For art, nature is unavoidable.“
Elaine de Kooning, 1955.
Judith Trepp. New Paintings
Characterized by a tension between the visible and invisible,
and the juxtaposition of emptiness and abundance, the work of American
painter Judith Trepp explores the uncanny
interaction of line, surface and space. Art Forum Ute Barth is delighted to
present a solo exhibition of the artist's recent works that continue her
enquiry into the relationship between expression and subjective experience,
as well as a new thematic focus on the perception of nature. Composed of
multiple repetitions, connections and fractures, the rhythmic forms of
Trepp's paintings draw on a dynamic interplay of harmony and discord.
Elemental contrasts such as light and dark, straight and flat, loose and
tight, and strong and tender define both her pictorial compositions and
working method.
For Trepp, the act of painting always begins with the careful
preparation of a surface. By applying multiple layers of egg tempera and
diluted washes of colored oil with a loose, feathery Japanese brush, she
allows the movement of paint, texture of canvas, and traces of brushstroke
to determine the underlying spatial and thematic structure of the
picture, as well as draw attention to the apparent significance of her
physical action and labor within the painting process. Trepp then inscribes
this meticulous surface with a series of painted signs that recall symbolic
forms such as mountains and rivers, or even people in motion. Here her
brushwork appears at once spontaneous and controlled, her gestures rapid yet
precise, as akin to Far Eastern calligraphy, as it is to artists such as
Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Hans Hoffmann whom have been influential
on Trepp's work since the beginning of her career.
Born in 1940's New York, the approach of the New York School,
with its emphasis on spontaneous emotional and spiritual expression as an
aesthetic strategy, served as Trepp's point of departure in the visual arts
(indeed, Harold Rosenberg's description of the canvas as “an arena in which
to act”, could still apply to her works today). However, in contrast to
classic abstract expressionists such as Kline and Motherwell, Trepp's
paintings conceal a skeptical and critical attitude: despite their apparent
spontaneity, both her surface preparation and gestural mark-making are based
on repeated and perfected sketches, a process that by definition deviates
from the logic of expressionism. The viewer thus perceives the borderline
between coincidence and control, chaos and order, and is drawn to question
the verisimilitude of the picture as the equivalent of experienced
impressions.
This relates closely to the ongoing debate around the notion
of authenticity in the visual arts which has commanded so much attention
since the rise of post-modernity. How, for example, are personal experiences
fictionalized in artworks? By what means do the experience and fictional
construction link to each other? And how can the viewer verify the
expression of the artist within the work? Confronted by Trepp's ambiguous
alter-expressionism, one might initially seek answers in the tangible: is
the depicted image a line or a surface? Does it present an illusionary space
or a two-dimensional form? Are the painted signs fragments of something
concrete or solely abstract? Yet it is her denial of a clear boundary
between dualisms such as line and surface, surface and space, fragment and
totality, that establishes her paintings as rhetorical figures - much like
zen buddhistic “Koans” intended to train us in thought beyond the either/or.

Opening
Reception on Saturday, May 21, 2011 3 – 5pm
A
surprising and humorous exhibition with veritable treasures starts on
Saturday at the gallery Art Forum Ute Barth.
The
attraction of drawings is hardly on the wane. Almost every artist
attends to this media some day. It can be a fleeting snap shot or a
frenzied, wide conception of ideas that captivates us. Just a sketch or
an elaborated work – tender or powerful; drawings are an immediate
expression of artistic sensitivity.
There are
exhibitions in Paris, Bonn, London and all over the world dealing with
this subject. But what is it, that makes it so appealing to the art
world? Is it a trend towards more intimacy? Or is it a desire for
immediacy and genuineness?
The
exhibition presents a wide and art historically interesting selection of
drawings from Animation Art to
Francis Bott, Masssimo Campigli, Lucia Coray, Werner
